TPU v6e and v5e

The two TPU generations these docs use, side by side, and which one to pick. Specs are Google’s; prices are Google’s on-demand list prices.

TPU v6e TPU v5e
Memory per chip 32 GB 16 GB
Memory bandwidth per chip 1,638 GBps 800 GiBps
Peak bf16 per chip 918 TFLOPs 197 TFLOPs
Peak int8 per chip 1,836 TOPs 393 TOPs
Chip-to-chip bandwidth (ICI) 800 GBps 400 GBps
--accelerator-type (one chip) v6e-1 v5litepod-1
--version v2-alpha-tpuv6e v2-alpha-tpuv5-lite
On-demand list price, one chip $2.70 an hour about $1.20 an hour
  • v6e is the default chip for every model.
  • v5e has half the memory and about a fifth of the peak compute. A model too big for one v5e chip splits across the 4 chips of a v5e-4 when its row says so. Each model’s row in the README says which chips it runs on.
  • Each model’s compiled kernel bundle is built per chip and per JAX version, and models.json lists which. On a chip or JAX version it was not built for, the model runs on plain JAX instead and prints one line saying so.

Hy-Nomas TPU v6e-4 Not tested yet One chip: the full pipeline fits on a single TPU v6e chip (32 GB), 2.46 s of compute per second of video, main model quantized. This version of mashbox run starts on a v6e-4 Not tested yet Supported: 4 chips
Qwen3.8-27B TPU v5e-4, TPU v6e-1, TPU v6e-4 Supported: a v5e-4 (4 chips), split across them automatically; one v5e chip is too small: the weights alone are about 27 GB and a v5e chip has 16 GB. 76.73 tokens/s for 1 request, 470.4 tokens/s for 8 Supported: one chip (v6e-1). 38.6 tokens/s for 1 request, 269 tokens/s for 8 Not tested yet Supported: 4 chips, split across them automatically. 110.78 tokens/s for 1 request, 652.2 tokens/s for 8
Track2Rig CPU, TPU v6e Not tested yet Supported: tested on a TPU v6e-1 VM: mashbox run track2rig runs on the VM’s host CPU (AMD EPYC 9B14) Not tested yet Not tested yet
TRELLIS.2 TPU v6e-1 Not tested yet Supported: one chip (v6e-1) Not tested yet Not tested yet

One TPU v6e chip, then one TPU v5e chip:

On your machine
gcloud compute tpus tpu-vm create mashbox-1 --zone=us-east5-b --accelerator-type=v6e-1 --version=v2-alpha-tpuv6e
gcloud compute tpus tpu-vm create mashbox-2 --zone=us-central1-a --accelerator-type=v5litepod-1 --version=v2-alpha-tpuv5-lite

Each one bills until you delete it (Run on Google Cloud TPU, step 8).
